What is heart valve disease?

The heart has four valves that function to push blood in one direction. People with heart valve disease means one or more of their valves aren't opening or closing properly. The result is disrupted blood flow, leading to a number of possible signs and symptoms, such as:

  • Heart murmur
  • Chest pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling of ankles and feet
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting
  • Irregular heartbeat
