Expertise

Rowena Johnson, MBChB, FRCR, is a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist with expertise in diagnostic imaging and image-guided interventional procedures in professional athletes. She works with athletes in Formula 1, the Premier League, Championship Football, the National Basketball Association, the Lawn Tennis Association, the British Olympic team, UK Athletics and the Royal Ballet, among others.

Professor Johnson has held numerous senior leadership roles at the Royal College of Radiologists, including chair and clinical lead of education. She also is the chair of Sports Medicine Imaging at the Carnegie School of Sport, Leeds Beckett University, which is the largest provider of sports studies in UK higher education.

Professor Johnson is a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) imaging group with an interest in artificial intelligence. She previously worked full time as an editor for the British Medical Journal and is a current advisory editor for the journal Clinical Radiology.

Procedures

  • Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) scans and body composition
  • Image-guided musculoskeletal injections including steroid, hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • MRI, CT and X-ray imaging of musculoskeletal injuries

  • Hamstring, quadriceps and calf injuries
  • Hip and groin pain in athletes
  • Nerve pain
  • Recurrent tendon injuries

Education

Professor Johnson read medicine at the University of Sheffield and undertook her radiology training at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust working at St Mary's, Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals. She undertook a fellowship in musculoskeletal radiology at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and completed a fellowship at the University of Toronto hospitals, Canada.

Research

Professor Johnson's main research interests are in groin pain in athletes, including adductor- and inguinal-related pain. This includes an internationally used MRI classification of different types of adductor avulsions.
