Expertise

Nick Boyle, BM, MS, FRCS, is a specialist laparoscopic, upper gastrointestinal and reflux surgeon. He has one of the UK's largest and most experienced practices in the treatment of benign gastro-oesophageal disease and is an internationally acclaimed reflux surgeon.

Mr Boyle trained in general surgery, then in specialist surgery of the oesophagus and stomach at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals in London and laparoscopic surgery at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit in Guildford. He spent time in North America after being awarded a fellowship to study hernia surgery. He was awarded a master of surgery degree by The University of London for his research into blood flow in the stomach and gastrointestinal tract and published numerous scientific papers based upon this work.

Mr Boyle was appointed consultant surgeon to Maidstone and Tunbridge in 2000, where he introduced complex minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to Kent and led the centralisation of gastro-oesophageal cancer surgery.

Over the last two decades he has developed a particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of gastro-oesophageal functional symptoms and reflux disease. In 2015, he founded RefluxUK and the UK's first multidisciplinary team dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with reflux, which has grown to provide diagnostic and treatment in five centres throughout the country. He has also pioneered new surgical treatments for reflux. In 2012, he was one of the first surgeons in the UK to perform LINX sphincter augmentation surgery and has become one of the most experienced surgeons in Europe. In 2022, he was the first surgeon in the UK to perform the RefluxStop procedure.
