Dincer Aktuerk, PhD, FRCS (CTh), is a leading cardiac surgeon specialising in minimally invasive and robotic procedures. As director of Robotic Cardiac Surgery at Barts Heart Centre and consultant at HCA Healthcare UK, he led the development of this pioneering service in London.

Mr Aktuerk's expertise includes a wide range of advanced cardiac procedures, including endoscopic (keyhole) mitral valve repair, aortic valve replacement and beating heart coronary bypass surgery. Mr Aktuerk champions enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery (ERACS) protocols, enabling patients to quickly resume their family life, work and sporting activities.

Driving the adoption of innovative surgical technologies, Mr Aktuerk actively collaborates with national and international research organisations, championing patient safety and clinical governance.

Education

Mr Aktuerk holds a doctorate in heart disease from the University Hospital Freiburg in Germany. He completed Higher Specialty Training in Cardiothoracic Surgery in the UK and obtained Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Cardiothoracic Surgery through the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He furthered his expertise through a fellowship at The Texas Heart Institute in the US, as well as a fellowship in Sydney, Australia, and advanced training in Germany.

Research

Mr Aktuerk has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and leads the Barts Cardiac Surgery Innovation Research Collaborative. He is the primary investigator for international randomised controlled trials and actively collaborates on research. He aims to improve long-term patient benefits through the introduction of innovative surgical technologies, such as robotic and endoscopic cardiac surgery.
